Source of the Lagan River

The Lagan is one of the two major rivers in Northern Ireland - the other is the River Bann.

The source or start of the river lagan is Slieve Croob near Dromara, Co. Down. The mountain is over 380 million years old, that’s even older than the Mourne Mountains which are nearby. The name, Slieve Croob, means ‘Hill of the Horse’s hoof’, and if you look at the mountain, it is horseshoe shaped.

The mouth of the river is in Belfast, where the Lagan flows into Belfast Lough.

The river starts as a tiny trickle of water flowing out of the mossy bog on top of the mountain. As it flows down the mountainside it gets bigger, growing into a small stream as small tributaries join the Lagan. A tributary is a small stream or river that flows into a bigger one.
